Our Children’s section has just unveiled a whole new section dedicated to cracking reading for children with dyslexia! This new section is filled with books by publishers Barrington Stoke which are specifically designed to be more appealing and accessible to children who have dyslexia or difficulty with reading.

Barrington Stoke is an independent publisher dedicated to cracking reading. They know that every parent wants their child to become a reader, and every teacher wants their students to make the jump from learning to read to loving to read. Their books are commissioned, edited and designed to break down the barriers that can stop this happening, from dyslexia and visual stress to simple reluctance.

Specially designed layouts and fonts
Once a reader is hooked by a story, research shows that their reading ability actually improves. Barrington Stoke books are edited and designed to minimise some of the obstacles that can stop struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers really getting hooked by a book. Their books don’t patronise and since they’re by the best authors in the business there’s no stigma attached to being seen reading them.
The tricks Barrington Stoke use to make their books accessible include:
- Short word lengths so readers can enjoy the achievement of finishing a book
- Lots of chapter breaks so readers can take a rest
- Special edit processes, with trialling by children of the correct reading age
- Cream paper which minimises glare
- Our own dyslexia-friendly font
- Special line, character and paragraph spacing
- Lots of illustration in lower reading-age titles to help with understanding

New selection of Manga
With lots of books to choose from for younger readers to young adults, there’s sure to be something to get reluctant readers hooked! We also now have a new stock of Manga comics for teenagers and young adults for an alternative reading experience.
